Refer to the General Rules and Information section at the front of this Syllabus for more information.

PROCEDURE

Arrive at the venue at least 15 minutes before scheduled performance time.

Clip the registration slip to the page of the selection to be performed. When your name is

called, take your music to the Adjudicator’s Secretary before proceeding to the performance floor or stage. After the class, please pick up music from the Adjudicator’s Secretary.

** Da capo signs should be observed. Repeat signs should ordinarily be ignored, but at

the discretion of the teacher and student, may be observed where deemed appropriate.

Choose music that is appropriate for the age of the singer.

Coaching of performers is not permitted.

The use of live flame is not permitted.

Piano accompaniment only is permitted (unless otherwise specified).

Participants must provide their own accompanist and include the accompanist’s name on the Entry Form.

Select entries from the following list of categories

CONTEMPORARY IDIOM - Conservatory Canada has published a “Contemporary Idiom” Syllabus which may be found on-line at conservatorycanada.ca.  Selections are listed by level; 1 through 8.  You may choose a selection matching your level of ability from those listed. Alternatively, selections may be chosen from any other recognized syllabus, or, others of an equivalent level.  You need not enter other classes to be eligible for Contemporary Idioms.

ADDITIONAL REPERTOIRE – A selection in a category not offered in the Festival Syllabus or a second selection in a category already entered once, excluding Musical Theatre.

ART SONG - A song of serious artistic intent, written by a recognized composer. Selection may be from English, Victorian, or contemporary periods; from Italian Arie Antiche, French “Chansons”, and German Lieder. May be sung in original or English translation. (No Oratorio or Sacred selections).

BAROQUE - Music of the Baroque period (1600-1750) – J.S. Bach, Handel, Couperin, Lully, Scarlatti, Caldara, etc.

CANADIAN - A work by a recognized Canadian composer.

LIST A - A selection from a Syllabus as indicated in General Rules.

LIST B - A selection from a Syllabus as indicated in General Rules.

LIST C - A selection from a Syllabus as indicated in General Rules

MUSICAL THEATRE - One selection only. May be from any staged production or motion picture. Costumes, movement, hand prop and one simple stage prop may be used.

SACRED TRADITIONAL Music may be graded material or Sacred music used in worship; from Traditional Liturgy (excludes Oratorio, Cantata, Contemporary Sacred).

TRADITIONAL FOLK SONG The musical repertory and tradition of communities, particularly rural, as opposed to Art Song. It generally develops anonymously. Can be arranged, eg. Cecil Sharp, M. Kennedy Fraser, B. Britten, H. Willan, etc. Folk songs which have become elaborate with accompaniment are considered Art Songs, (Ralph Vaughn Williams).

Folk Songs may be accompanied by guitar. Folk songs are not Ballads.

DUET (ANY CATEGORY) The “principal” partner (higher grade) MUST submit the Entry Form and payment. Please include full information on both performers. Include Duet information on both participants’ Solo Entry Forms. Split fees will not be accepted.

TRIO/ENSEMBLE Trio entries are to be submitted on a Group entry form and paid for by one member of the Trio. Please include the names, ages and grades of all members. Please include Trio

information on each member’s solo Entry Form.

INTERMEDIATES, SENIORS, OPEN

GERMAN LIEDER 19th Century German composers. Accompanist will not be adjudicated.

OPERA Selection from any standard opera. Orig. key. Recit where applicable. Orig.language.

OPERETTA A light, musical dramatic work with a romantic plot, spoken dialogue, eg. Gilbert &

Sullivan or the period of Friml, Herbert, Romberg, Lehar, Offenbach and J. Strauss.

ORATORIO Grade 5 and over. A narrative or dramatic work, usually Sacred, employing arias, recitative, choruses and orchestral music

RECITAL PROGRAM - Three songs, not from opera or oratorio, from three contrasting styles, eg. Baroque,  Romantic, Modern. Time limit, 15 minutes. (One mark for the over-all performance)

CONCERT PROGRAM - Two or three selections or a complete work such as a song cycle, cantata, motet, etc. Not from opera, oratorio, or musical theatre. Time limit, 15 minutes.

(One mark for the over-all performance).

There is no time limit on all open categories, but please provide accurate times.
